1830: Railways & Robber Barons is a classic economic strategy game set in the 19th century, during the explosive expansion of railroads in the eastern regions of the United States. Players take on the roles of railroad tycoons who, with no randomness involved, compete in investing, building railway lines, manipulating stocks, and sometimes—quite thematically—ruthlessly draining companies like true “robber barons.”
The game belongs to the 18XX family and is known for its depth and complete absence of luck.
At the core of the game is the buying, selling, and manipulation of shares in various historical railroad companies. Players can take control of a company as its president, manage it—or intentionally run it into the ground. The map is composed of hexes on which players place different track tiles to expand the rail network. As the company president, you decide on train purchases, dividend payouts, route expansion, and whether you will play fair or embrace the role of a typical robber baron.
There is no element of luck in the game: identical moves always lead to identical outcomes. The game ends when the bank runs out of money or when a player goes bankrupt. The winner is the one with the greatest personal wealth.
1830: Railways & Robber Barons is a timeless classic for players who love pure economics, high player interaction, and entrepreneurial cunning. 🚂
