Clank! combines deck-building with dungeon exploration. Each player begins with a basic deck of cards and gradually acquires new cards throughout the game, allowing for faster movement, more effective combat, increased gold acquisition, or special abilities. As a result, each player's deck evolves and becomes more powerful over time.
As they explore the dungeon, players move across the map, collect treasures, and decide how deeply they are willing to venture. More valuable artifacts can be found deeper within the dungeon, but doing so also increases the danger. One of the game's signature mechanics is “Clank!”, which represents the noise made by the thieves. Whenever a player generates too much noise, they add their cubes to the danger bag. When the dragon attacks, cubes are drawn from the bag, potentially causing damage to the players.
In the Master Thief Edition, the endgame is more intense than in the original version. Once the first player escapes the dungeon or is eliminated, the dragon begins attacking the remaining players more frequently. Ghost cubes have also been added; these may appear during dragon attacks and deal damage to all players simultaneously. This makes escaping the dungeon during the final stages of the game even more dangerous and exciting.
