Cthulhu: Dark Providence is a competitive game set in the world of Cthulhu: Death May Die and inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft. The story takes place in the United States during the Great Depression, where players are secretly divided into factions of Investigators and Cultists — both striving to shape the fate of humanity.
Cultists aim to exploit the nation’s vulnerability and reshape it into a distorted version of reality with the help of horrors from other dimensions, while Investigators work to stop the approaching doom.
The player with the most points on the winning side claims victory.
The game combines several key mechanics that create a tense, tactical, and psychological experience. Players can be Investigators or Cultists, each with their own hidden goals. Trust and deception are central elements — you never know who is working against whom. Using Influence cubes, players bid for Asset cards, control of cities, and Mythos cards. These cards strengthen their personal deck and expand their available actions.
Players can hire agents, persuade them to switch sides, sabotage opponents’ agents, or even carry out assassinations.
Maintaining mental health is crucial:
- Investigators must remain sane,
- Cultists sometimes benefit from slipping into madness.
Investigators score points by sealing portals and progressing their investigation. Cultists advance by protecting portals and performing rituals.
Cthulhu: Dark Providence is a strategic, thematically powerful game with hidden roles and deck‑building that delivers a tense psychological experience set in a world of cosmic horror. 🐙
