The game is based on the popular video game Dead Cells, in which the player takes on the role of the Beheaded—an immortal protagonist who awakens in a dark prison and must fight their way through dangerous biomes filled with monsters, traps, and secrets. Every death is a new beginning, and every run is a new opportunity to grow stronger. Instead of pixels, you now explore the world through cards, tiles, and miniatures, but the same sense of tension and progression remains.
Players build their combat deck, explore randomly generated biomes, and battle enemies. Together, they control a team of Beheaded heroes who confront deadly foes and powerful bosses. After each successful or unsuccessful run, players earn Cells that can be spent on permanent upgrades, including new cards, equipment, and mutations.
Combat takes place over three rounds, during which players choose combat cards and face multiple enemies at once. Deciding who to attack, when to take risks, and how to allocate damage are all crucial to survival. The biomes are full of surprises—merchants, treasures, traps, and enemies—and every choice influences the course of the game.
The board game does an excellent job of capturing the feel of the video game: progression, death, and trying again. Even after completing the campaign, players can continue at higher difficulty levels or start over with new combinations and strategies.
If you enjoy a mix of tactical gameplay, character progression, challenging encounters, and dark fantasy, Dead Cells: The Rogue-Lite Board Game is an excellent addition to your collection. 🧟♂️⚔️
