Dominant Species: Marine is a standalone strategic board game by designer Chad Jensen, based on the acclaimed Dominant Species. This time, the action moves into the primordial ocean, where marine organisms fight for survival and dominance in the period following the end of the Ice Age.

The game is set roughly 60 million years in the past, at the time when the great Ice Age has just come to an end. Players take on the roles of four major groups of marine animals: fish, reptiles, cephalopods, and crustaceans. Each group strives to adapt to the changing ocean conditions, expand its influence, and become the dominant species. However, a looming threat hangs over all life—the arrival of a massive asteroid that may trigger a mass extinction.

Dominant Species: Marine features worker placement, area control, grid movement, and tile placement mechanics. Players use action pawns to perform various actions, such as:

  • Speciation – spreading your species into new regions.
  • Migration – moving species across the ocean.
  • Adaptation – modifying traits to survive more effectively.
  • Evolution – gaining powerful special abilities through cards.

One of the key differences from the original game is that actions are resolved immediately after placing an action pawn, which allows for greater flexibility and a faster pace. In addition, players begin the game by choosing one of three trait cards that grant their species a unique ability.

Thanks to its complexity and thematic depth, this game is well‑suited for experienced players seeking a challenging and immersive gameplay experience. 🐙
