Fall of the Mountain King is a thematically rich and strategically demanding board game that serves as a prequel to In the Hall of the Mountain King. This time, however, you are not building an underground kingdom — you are defending it from an invasion of evil gnomes!
In the game, players take on the role of troll leaders fighting to protect their mountain homeland from relentless gnome attacks. The gnomes have taken advantage of a period of peace and struck with full force. Troll clans must unite, recruit heroes, and fight for honor and survival. The mountain is divided into the domains of seven clans (Fire, Ice, Moon, Granite, Moss, Hammer, and Mud), over which players compete for influence and control.
Players build their Ancestry (a family tree) using a selection of cards that determine which actions they can take and how powerful those actions are. Troll units move through caverns, claim territories, and battle against gnomes. Players also compete for the support of mighty heroes who provide special abilities. At the end of each round, the gnomes attack from random directions. Trolls who bravely fall in battle earn honor (points). After three waves of assaults, the player with the most honor wins.
