Formaggio is a board game set in early 20th‑century Italy, where players take on the role of Italian cheesemakers who produce, age, and sell high‑quality artisanal cheeses in their creameries. The goal is to become the most prestigious cheesemaker in the country.

Formaggio is a standalone expansion for Fromage. When you combine the two games, you can freely mix any four board quadrants and choose any combination of structure tiles, offering greater variety and more paths to victory.

The game takes place on a rotating board that represents different Italian regions and locations, such as vineyards, Venetian canals, the regions of Italy, and even a bank where cheese can be used as collateral for loans.

Formaggio is designed as a simultaneous worker‑placement game, meaning that players are constantly taking actions and the gameplay flows very dynamically.
After each round, the board rotates and the cheese “ages,” which affects when players retrieve their workers. The three types of cheese (soft, hard, blue) are associated with specific workers, and the different aging levels (bronze, silver, gold, platinum) determine how long workers remain locked.

Each of the four board quadrants introduces a new mini‑game with its own scoring rules, for example:

• Vigneto – pairing cheeses with wines
• Venezia – selling cheese to restaurants along the canals
• Regioni – distributing cheese across Italy
• Banca – depositing cheese as loan collateral

New elements of the game include:

• Platinum cheeses that take the longest to age but earn the most points
• New structures and creamery upgrades that allow players to build an efficient economic engine
