Hadrian’s Wall is a complex and highly thematic flip-and-write board game designed by Bobby Hill. Players take on the role of Roman generals in the year 122 AD, tasked with building and defending the famous Hadrian’s Wall in the north of Britain.
The game is set during a historical period when the Roman Empire constructed a defensive wall to protect against invasions by Pictish tribes. Players do not only build the physical wall, but also develop civil infrastructure, military strength, economy, and the social structure within their colony. Every decision influences long-term development and defensive capability.
Hadrian’s Wall is known for its deep mechanics and two large player sheets that are filled in throughout the game. Instead of rolling dice, Fate cards are revealed each round to determine available resources. Players assign different types of workers (soldiers, builders, servants, civilians) to perform actions. It is possible to construct buildings, train troops, and develop trade, culture, and religion. Each round, an attack from Pictish tribes occurs, which must be repelled with a proper defense. Points are gained through four main pillars: renown, piety, valor, and discipline.
Hadrian’s Wall is an excellent choice for fans of medium-weight eurogames, historical themes, and flip-and-write mechanics who are looking for a deep, thoughtful, and rewarding experience. 🛡️
