Hunt for the Ring is a tense board game set in the world of The Lord of the Rings, taking players into the early chapters of Tolkien’s saga—Frodo’s journey from the Shire to Bree and onward to Rivendell. It is a hidden-movement game in which one player, as Frodo and his companions, tries to evade the Nazgûl, who are controlled by the other player(s).
The game is built around stealth and pursuit in the fantasy world of Middle-earth. Frodo carries the One Ring and must deliver it safely to Rivendell, while the Nazgûl—Sauron’s dark servants—attempt to capture him. The game is divided into two parts:
- Part One: Frodo travels from the Shire to Bree, with the player having full control over his movements.
- Part Two: Frodo moves automatically (with the help of cards), while the player controls Gandalf, who supports Frodo and misleads the Nazgûl.
Frodo moves across the map without revealing his exact location. The Nazgûl try to deduce where Frodo is by following clues and using logic. Each side has completely different goals and mechanics. The game can be played in two separate sessions or consecutively as one longer experience. Gandalf and the Nazgûl have special cards and abilities that add depth and variety to the gameplay.
If you enjoy games focused on hiding, searching, bluffing, and tactical thinking—and you love a rich fantasy setting—Hunt for the Ring is an excellent choice. đź’Ť
