Kanagawa is an elegant and artistically inspired board game that immerses players in the world of Japanese painting, specifically the school of the legendary master Hokusai. It is a game that combines aesthetics, strategy, and a relaxed atmosphere—perfect for anyone who appreciates beauty and thoughtful gameplay.

In Kanagawa, you are a student in the painting school of Master Hokusai, famous for his iconic artwork The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Your goal is to create the most beautiful and harmonious painting that will impress the master and earn you the honor of being his best student.

Players build their painting by adding cards depicting various landscapes, seasons, animals, and people, all in the style of traditional Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e). At the same time, they also develop their studio, which gives them more options when painting.

Players choose from several cards offered by the school. The cards are added to a row representing the painting, and specific combinations of motifs earn points. Players must decide whether to take a card immediately or wait for a better opportunity.

Each card has two possible uses:

  • as part of the painting (the right side),
  • or as a studio upgrade (the left side), providing more brushes, colors, or actions.

Players decide whether to claim a card right away or wait for more cards to be revealed—risking that another player might take them first. In addition, they can earn diplomas, which give extra points for achieving certain goals (e.g., several identical animals, variety of motifs, etc.).

Kanagawa is an excellent choice for those who enjoy a calm, aesthetic, and strategic game that does not rely on aggressive competition but instead encourages creativity and thoughtful decisions.
