King of Monster Island is a cooperative board game based on the popular game King of Tokyo, but with one key difference: instead of fighting each other, players join forces against a common enemy — a gigantic boss monster threatening to destroy the world.
The game is set on a volcanic island where a portal opens, allowing a powerful monster to emerge. Players take on the roles of different kaiju (giant monsters) and try to prevent the boss from building enough crystals and activating the portal, which would mean the end of the world. Everything is enhanced by colorful illustrations, a massive volcano-shaped tower, and the feeling of a cinematic battle between titans.
Players roll dice up to three times and choose which results to use for attacking, moving, healing, gaining energy, and more.
Game phases:
Boss Phase – the boss moves, activates its minions, builds crystals, and attacks the players. Dice are thrown into the volcanic tower, which randomly determines in which zone the effects will occur.
Monster Phase – the player takes their turn, uses dice, buys power cards, activates allies, and cooperates with other players.
Allies and power cards provide additional abilities and strategic options. Events are random cards that can help or hinder the players. The game includes three different bosses, each with two difficulty levels, significantly increasing replayability.
If you enjoyed King of Tokyo but wished for more cooperation and less player elimination, King of Monster Island is an excellent choice. 🦖🌋👾
