Kutná Hora: The City of Silver is a medium‑weight euro game that combines historical themes, realistic economics, and strategic city building. The game was published by Czech Games Edition and designed by Czech creators Ondřej Bystroň, Petr Čáslava, and Pavel Jarosch.

The game is based on the real town of Kutná Hora in the Czech Republic, which flourished in the 14th century thanks to its rich silver deposits. Players take on the roles of influential families contributing to the city’s development, constructing buildings, operating mines, and even helping to build the magnificent Cathedral of St. Barbara. Each player belongs to three of the six guilds (e.g., miners, builders, innkeepers), which affects their possibilities in the game.

Players build structures and mines, increasing their production and income. Every building affects the city’s economy. The game uses a supply‑and‑demand system — the more abundant a resource is, the lower its price becomes. This means that a player’s actions can influence the income of all players. Each player has an identical set of six cards, each offering two actions — when you play a card, you choose one action and forfeit the other. This requires careful planning. Players can “steal” building plans from each other, influence the prices of goods, and even affect the political makeup of the city council through influential patricians. Contributing to the construction of the cathedral grants points and bonuses, but also brings tax obligations. 🪙
