Obscurio is a visually rich and tense semi-cooperative board game that combines elements of hidden roles, deduction, and communication through images. Players find themselves trapped in an enchanted library from which they must escape—but among them is a traitor trying to mislead them and keep them trapped.
In the game, you take on the roles of wizards guided by the Grimoire—a magical book that cannot speak, but uses illustrations to direct players toward the correct exit doors. One of the wizards, however, is a traitor who attempts to sabotage the team by adding misleading images while keeping their identity hidden.
The tension increases with each round as players try to decipher clues while also observing others’ behavior to uncover the traitor. All of this takes place in an atmospheric setting filled with illusions, traps, and time pressure.
The Grimoire uses butterfly tokens to highlight parts of illustrations that are meant to guide players toward the correct door. Players keep their loyalties hidden—only the Grimoire knows who the traitor is. They discuss clues and try to determine who is misleading them. Decisions must be made quickly, as time is constantly running out. Each round may include traps that make communication or decision-making more difficult.
The game ends when the wizards successfully escape the library or when they lose all cohesion tokens, resulting in a traitor victory.
