Paladins of the West Kingdom is a strategic board game with a strong medieval theme, where players become nobles defending and developing their kingdom in the 9th century against external threats such as Saracens and Vikings.
The game takes you to Western Francia around the year 900, a time when it is necessary to build fortifications, spread faith, and protect the realm from invaders. Players hire paladins, build outposts, reinforce city defenses, recruit monks, and confront external enemies. All of this creates a tense atmosphere where every decision matters, and the historical context strongly shapes the game’s feeling.
Each player has their own player board where they use various types of workers to perform actions. Each action requires a specific combination of worker colors (e.g., red, blue, black, white, purple, green), which adds interesting tactical depth. At the start of each round, you choose one of your 12 paladins, who grants special bonuses for that round, additional workers, or discounts on certain actions. The remaining two paladins are prepared for upcoming rounds, allowing for long‑term planning.
During the game, players advance in three attributes — Faith, Influence, and Strength. Different actions require certain levels of these attributes and allow you to progress along other tracks. Special actions let you upgrade your main actions, making them more efficient and enabling more moves with fewer workers. Each game includes randomly selected objectives and special actions, increasing replayability and variety.
Most actions take place on your personal board, so there is no blocking of other players, though some shared elements exist, such as taxes and special communal actions.
If you enjoy complex games with plenty of opportunities for optimization and a rich historical theme, Paladins of the West Kingdom is an excellent choice! 🛡️
