Piñatas is a fast, fun, and colorful trick‑taking game by acclaimed designer Reiner Knizia, built around a tense balance of risk and perfect timing. In the game, you want to win a trick — but you must never be the last to do so, or you’ll be left without any candy!
The theme draws inspiration from real piñatas — the candy goes to those who strike at just the right moment, but if you wait too long, everything falls apart.
Piñatas captures the feeling of waiting in line at a birthday party:
- everyone wants the candy,
- everyone is waiting for the perfect moment,
- a bit too early or a bit too late — and you walk away empty‑handed.
The starting player sets the lead suit, and the others must follow if they can. The highest card in the lead suit wins the trick (unless a trump is played). When a player wins three tricks, they drop out of the round. The earlier they drop out, the more points they earn — because those points come from the tricks won by other players.
The last player remaining in the round scores points only for their own tricks. This dramatically shifts the flow of the game and makes timing the key strategic element. The game is played over several rounds until someone reaches 25 points.
Piñatas is a light, colorful, and wonderfully tense trick‑taking game that rewards those who know how to wait — but not for too long. 🎉
