Port Royal transports you to a bustling Caribbean harbor during the age of pirates, merchants, and colonial expeditions. Players take on the role of ambitious traders looking to amass wealth, gain influence, and avoid the many dangers that lurk at sea. Behind the gameplay lies a world filled with ships, sailors, taxes, and special missions that must be completed to achieve victory.
This is a card game with a push-your-luck system, where players draw cards from the shared deck and place them in the so‑called harbor display. The cards represent:
- Ships (a source of coins, but also a risk—if a ship with the same color appears twice, the turn immediately ends),
- Persons (sailors, traders, the admiral, governor, etc.—they provide special abilities and points),
- Expeditions (special missions requiring specific persons),
- Tax increases (penalties for players who have accumulated too much wealth).
After the card‑revealing phase comes the trade and hire phase, where players purchase cards from the harbor display. Other players may also buy cards, but they must pay the active player for the privilege.
Goal of the game: Collect 12 influence points (victory points) through person cards and expeditions. When a player reaches 12 points, the game continues until the end of the round and then concludes.
