Praga Caput Regni is a strategic board game that transports players to medieval Prague during the reign of Charles IV, a time when the city flourished and iconic landmarks such as the Charles Bridge, St. Vitus Cathedral, Charles University, and the Hunger Wall were built.
Players take on the role of nobles competing for the king’s favor by contributing to the city’s development. The historical theme is strongly present — from the artwork to the mechanics inspired by real historical projects. For example, a popular legend claims that eggs were used in the construction of the Charles Bridge, which in the game appears as a special resource.
The core of the game is the action crane (a rondel), where players choose from six main actions:
- Gathering resources (gold, stone)
- Constructing roads, bridges, walls, and buildings
- Upgrading actions
- Gaining influence at the royal court
Each action has its own cost and bonus, which shift depending on the crane’s position. Players must strategically plan when to perform certain actions, as the crane rotates after every turn and changes what is available.
In addition, each player has a personal player board where they build walls and upgrade actions, gaining extra points and bonuses.
Praga Caput Regni is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a complex, thematically rich, and visually stunning game that rewards thoughtful play and offers many opportunities for strategic exploration. 🏗️
