Spirit Island is a cooperative strategy game that places players in the role of spirits of nature, whose task is to protect an island from colonial invaders. Instead of playing as colonists, as in many other games, here you defend the island and its native inhabitants — the Dahan — from destruction, urban expansion, and environmental devastation.
Each player controls a unique spirit with its own powers, elements, and playstyle — ranging from slow territorial influence to explosive attacks or manipulation of natural forces.
It is a complex but incredibly thematic game. Players work together to stop the advancing colonists. Every spirit has different abilities, allowing for varied gameplay and strong synergies between players. Players choose and play power cards with different speeds (fast or slow), elements, and effects. Each spirit grows over the course of the game — expanding its presence, gaining new powers, and acquiring more energy.
The invaders act in a predictable pattern (Explore → Build → Ravage), which allows careful planning of defensive strategies. Generating fear among the colonists lowers the victory conditions and accelerates the game toward the defenders’ success.
