The Hobbit: There and Back Again is a competitive adventure board game based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved novel The Hobbit. Designed by renowned game designer Reiner Knizia, the game captures the spirit of Bilbo’s journey through Middle-earth.

Players embark on an epic quest from Bag End to the Lonely Mountain, encountering iconic challenges from the story: trolls, goblins, werewolves, giant spiders, and of course, the fearsome dragon Smaug. Each player charts their own adventure in a personal scenario book, marking progress with a dry-erase marker.

This is a roll-and-write game with elements of open dice drafting. Each player has their own adventure book featuring a map and objectives. In each round, five dice are rolled (three for path-building, two for resources and magic). Players take turns selecting dice and performing actions such as drawing paths, collecting bread or swords, and using Gandalf’s magic. The goal is to connect characters (like the twelve dwarves, Gandalf, and Thorin) to Bag End and provide them with resources to earn points. The game includes 8 unique scenarios, each with its own rules and goals.
