The Red Cathedral is a strategic Euro‑style board game set in mid‑15th century Moscow, during the reign of Ivan the Terrible, when the construction of the famous St. Basil’s Cathedral was commissioned.
Players take on the roles of construction teams or architects striving to contribute as much as possible to the cathedral’s construction in order to earn the favor of the Tsar. Although everyone works on the same monumental project, it is a competition—only one architect will enjoy the greatest prestige when construction is complete.
The game is designed for 1–4 players and combines several elegant yet deep mechanics:
- a dice‑driven rondel for resource collection, where the choice of a die and its movement influences opponents’ options,
- resource management (stone, wood, gold, bricks, gems) required for building and embellishing sections of the cathedral,
- area control / claiming through placement of banners to take over specific tower sections,
- construction and decoration, with ornaments providing additional points and bonuses,
- an end‑game trigger, where the game ends when a player completes a certain portion of the cathedral, followed by final scoring.
Every turn requires careful consideration, as actions are limited and players are in constant competition for resources and space.
The Red Cathedral is an elegant and thoughtful strategy game in which every decision brings you closer to a magnificent cathedral—or to celebrating your rival’s success. ⛪✨
