The Resistance: Avalon is an intense social deduction board game set in the world of Arthurian legend, where players take on the roles of Knights of the Round Table—or traitors loyal to Mordred, secretly posing as knights. It is a game of hidden roles, bluffing, and logical deduction that has become a classic choice for larger gaming groups.
In Avalon, two sides clash: the loyal servants of King Arthur and the evil followers of Mordred. The Good side aims to successfully complete three out of five missions, while the Evil side seeks to sabotage those missions—all within an atmosphere of secrecy and distrust. A key role is Merlin, who knows the identities of the Evil players but must remain hidden, as the Assassin can attempt to kill Merlin at the end of the game and thereby steal victory for the forces of Evil.
Each player receives a secret role (such as Merlin, Percival, Mordred, Morgana, Oberon, and others). A leader selects a team to go on a mission, and all players vote on whether to approve the team. Players sent on the mission secretly choose either a “Success” or “Fail” card. If at least one “Fail” card is played, the mission fails (with special rule exceptions at higher player counts). If the Good side completes enough missions, the Assassin gets one chance to guess Merlin’s identity—if successful, Evil wins. Optional roles can be added to increase depth and confusion, such as Morgana, who appears as Merlin, or Oberon, who is Evil but hidden even from his fellow villains.
The game strongly encourages discussion, accusations, bluffing, and shifting alliances. Few games work as well with 7–10 players, and even when the Good side appears to have won, Evil can still turn the tables with a successful assassination of Merlin.
