Ticket to Ride Nederland is an expansion for Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride Europe. It includes a new game board with additional rules.
The core mechanics of Ticket to Ride remain the same as always — players collect train cards in order to claim routes between pairs of cities, with the main objective being to complete the destination tickets they hold — but Ticket to Ride: Nederland changes the gameplay in two important ways.
1. Most routes are double routes
Nearly every route on the board is a double route, meaning there are two separate tracks between cities. Both tracks are available regardless of the number of players.
2. Every route requires a bridge toll
Each route — single or double — has a bridge toll that a player must pay when building it:
- For a single route or the first track of a double route, the player pays 1–4 coins to the bank.
- For the second track of a double route, the player pays the toll to the player who built the first track.
Players start the game with 30 coins, and if they cannot afford to pay a toll, they must take a loan card, which costs them –5 points at the end of the game.
Coin bonuses at the end of the game
Coins are not important only for avoiding loans — at the end of the game, players receive bonus points based on how many coins they have left compared to others.
For example, in a five‑player game:
- 1st place: 55 points
- 2nd place: 35 points
- Others: 20, 10, and 0 points
If a player has taken a loan, they are not eligible for these bonuses.
High‑value destination tickets
To balance the coin bonuses, the expansion includes many high‑value destination tickets:
- Six tickets worth 29 or more points
- Seventeen additional tickets worth 17–26 points
