Ticket to Ride: Northern Lights is a standalone game in the Ticket to Ride series that takes players through Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland.
During the game, you explore:
- the lively port cities of Northern Europe,
- the charming fjords beyond the Arctic Circle,
- snowy forests, countryside, and mountain regions,
- archipelagos like Turku and colorful harbors such as Bergen.
The game is designed for 2–5 players and lasts 30–60 minutes.
Its mechanics are similar to classic Ticket to Ride titles but introduce several important innovations.
Main mechanics:
- collecting train cards,
- building railway and ferry routes between cities,
- open card drafting,
- managing networks and connections,
- contracts / destination tickets,
- end‑game bonus conditions — each game uses 4 out of 11 randomly selected bonus cards, significantly changing the flow of play. These can reward the longest route, the most unused trains, connections between specific regions, and more.
Special Northern Lights mechanics:
- new ferry mechanics – a pair of matching colored cards may be used as a substitute for a locomotive, speeding up play and reducing “dead” cards,
- routes that reward extra cards – some paths allow players to draw additional cards, creating new tactical opportunities,
- increased interactivity – the map is wide with many possible routes, but the northern areas are sparsely connected, making certain links strategically crucial.
