Warhammer Quest: Darkwater is a cooperative “dungeon crawler” adventure set in the world of Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. The story takes place around Jade Abbey, once a sacred temple that was corrupted by the forces of Nurgle, the god of decay and plague.
Players take on the roles of a group of heroes who fight their way through rotting swamps, crumbling halls, and infected caves to stop the evil demon Gelgus the Withered and cleanse the source of life (the Everspring).
It is a cooperative game for 1–4 players, where you always control a team of four heroes.
The campaign is divided into 3 acts, lasting around 10–14 hours in total. You can also play individual scenarios (skirmishes) for quicker sessions. Each mission is determined by an encounter card that defines the map, objectives, and rules.
Each hero has 3 basic actions (move, attack, assist). Actions are powered by energy cards—you must decide whether to use them for a basic action or to enhance another. This system creates tactical dilemmas with every turn. Combat is based on rolling dice for attack and defense, while enemies are activated through a simple dice-based AI system.
Progression is not classic “leveling,” but instead relies on:
- acquiring equipment,
- earning rewards,
- improving throughout the campaign.
Instead of tiles, the game uses a large map book, which speeds up setup and allows for varied scenarios.
