Whitehall Mystery is a thematic board game that takes players into the dark and mysterious London of 1888—during the time of the infamous Jack the Ripper.
The game is based on a real historical event, the so-called Whitehall Murders, which took place during the same period. Players engage in a tense game of cat and mouse:
- one player takes on the role of the mysterious killer (Jack),
- the others are investigators from the London police.
Jack’s goal is to secretly place evidence around the city, while the investigators try to track him down and capture him before he completes his “plan.”
Whitehall Mystery is an example of a hidden movement and deduction game.
Jack moves in secret and records his moves, while the others do not know his location. One player competes against a group of cooperating investigators. The investigators check locations; if Jack has already been there, they gain a “clue” that helps them reconstruct his path. This leads to the gradual narrowing of possible routes until they attempt an arrest. Jack can use special moves (e.g., carriage, boat, passages), adding an extra layer of strategy.
The game is divided into several “hunt phases,” during which Jack travels between key locations while the investigators try to catch up with him.
