ZÈRTZ is an abstract strategy game for two players, part of the renowned GIPF Project. The game uses white, gray, and black marbles (often described as “marble balls”) that represent different values, along with rings that form the playing surface.
ZÈRTZ is a game of sacrifice, where success depends on how cleverly a player gives up less valuable pieces in order to gain a long-term advantage.
No marble belongs to an individual player—both players use the same set of pieces, which strongly emphasizes control of initiative and forced moves. Whenever a jump is possible, the player must perform it (similar to checkers), allowing for chains of forced captures and deep tactical planning several moves ahead. When no jump is available, the player adds a marble of any color and simultaneously removes an empty ring from the edge of the board, causing the play area to gradually shrink and the tension to increase.
The goal of the game is to capture enough marbles of a specific color (for example, 4 white, 5 gray, or 6 black) or 3 marbles of each color. Victory usually comes as the result of a well-timed and carefully planned sacrifice.
ZÈRTZ is a minimalist yet intensely tense strategy game, where those who patiently sacrifice today are the ones who secure a decisive victory tomorrow. ⚪⚫
